Roofs come in all shapes and sizes, with tiles made from a range of materials, from concrete to natural slate. If your roof doesn’t get much sunlight, it’s especially prone to moss growth. While moss might seem harmless at first, it can lead to serious problems if left untreated. When wet, moss can hold up to five times its dry weight in water, which can make rainstorms even more troublesome. In colder weather, frozen moss can weaken roof tiles, putting your roof’s integrity at risk.

Dry weather doesn’t offer much relief either—moss balls can dry out, break off, and clog your gutters, leading to overflow and potential structural damage. Even after the moss falls away, spores remain on your roof, ready to start the cycle all over again.

So, how do we clean your roof without using harsh pressure washing?

Our process begins with a careful, hands-on approach. Our skilled team uses specialised scrapers that are designed to match the shape of your roof tiles, ensuring every bit of moss is removed without damaging the surface. Depending on the height of your roof, we use scaffold towers or cherry pickers to safely access and thoroughly clean all areas.

Once the moss is gone, we treat your roof with a soft wash biocide, applied through an ultra-low-pressure pure water system. This treatment doesn’t just remove visible growth—it eliminates algae, lichen, and any remaining moss spores. The biocide works by breaking down the cell walls of these organisms, killing them at the root. Over the following months, natural weather will wash away the dead material, leaving your roof clean, disinfected, and looking great for the long term.

Exhoclean’s Roof Cleaning Services are designed to rejuvenate your roof and protect your property from the ongoing challenges of moss and other biological growth. Contact us today to schedule your roof cleaning and see the difference our expertise can make.

The simple answer is yes, you should definitely clean your roof if it needs it. Roofs can easily end up with moss infestations that can cause damage to your roof, resulting in leaks and brittle roof tiles.

Not taking care of moss can also mean it ends up falling off your roof and potentially blocking your drainpipes.

It’s generally not a good idea to use high pressure on roofs, especially on delicate tiles. Utilising the special equipment we have along with much lower pressure and high temperatures, excellent results can be achieved on most roof types.

Cleaning your roof incorrectly and with the wrong equipment can cause damage – which can cost a lot of money to repair. It is recommended that you leave it to the professionals with experience, as they know how to get the job done without resulting in damage.

Professional roof cleaners will also be able to point out any areas that have already sustained damage so you can get them sorted out.

Roof mould is not good for your house or your health so you should get it taken care of as soon as you notice it. Mould can degrade your roof tiles and get inside your roof if left unattended. Over time this can get worse and spread throughout your house, possibly affecting your health.

The best way to get moss off your roof is by scraping it off. We do this with specialist scrapers that contour to different roof tiles. This helps ensure you get all the moss removed without damaging the roof.

It is generally a good idea to get your roof cleaned every one to two years, depending on how long it takes for moss to grow back and how dirty it gets during this time.

We use an environmentally-friendly biocidal wash that gets rid of growths and stops them coming back. This naturally breaks down over the course of 12 months, meaning your clean lasts as long as possible.
